See the latest rankings for each state's top five disc golf courses in "5 Best Disc Golf Courses in Each U.S. State: 2023."
A map of the U.S. with large blue dots indicating the location of each state's best course and small black dots indicating its other top four
Locations of the top five disc golf courses in each U.S. state. The large blue dot indicates the location of the #1 course. The smaller dots show the locations of other top courses. Some states may have fewer than five dots due to multiple top courses being at or very near the same location.

This is the second year we've released rankings like this. In 2020, we only revealed each state's #1 disc golf course, but we got so many requests to go further that we've expanded to each state's top five in 2021.

You can find the states' best disc golf courses at the end of this post. Each state is listed alphabetically with a table showing the rank of each of its top five. Before that, we take a look at some of the most interesting things we noticed about the courses that made each state's list.

How Many States' Best Courses Are Also Their Most Popular?

A disc golf tee pad in front of a fairway that drops down to a green area with Christmas trees and also water

Along with which courses are the best in each state, we also keep track of which ones are the most popular. By popular we mean simply "most played."

Each year when we reveal the most popular course in each state, it spurs a lot of debate about whether the courses that get used the most really, for lack of a better word, "deserve" how much play they get based on their quality. Because of that, we thought it would be interesting to go through our list of the most popular disc golf course in every U.S. state from 2020 and see how many ended up being among the states' best.

It turned out 18 of the 50 states had their highest traffic on one of their best courses last year. Of those 18, eight were states' number one courses. The states where the absolute best course was also the most popular were Alaska, Illinois, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, North Dakota, West Virginia, and Wyoming.

Something else of note is that the vast majority of states where the most popular course was among the state's best were places where less disc golf was played generally. In the article on most popular courses, we organized the list by how many rounds each state's top course had – the first state in the list having the most rounds played on its most popular course and the 50th the least rounds played on its most popular course.

Thirteen of the 18 overlapping popular/best courses came from states in places 27-50 on our list of most popular courses.

It's hard to say if this has any one specific meaning. It could be that in places with smaller disc golf communities, more resources are put into making courses in high traffic areas good courses. It could be that when there are fewer disc golf options (as is pretty much universally the case in places where less disc golf is played), players gravitate to better courses. It could be that many of these communities have so few courses that their most popular course simply had a better shot at being one of its five best.

The answer is likely a combination of these factors as well as others. If you'd like a more scientific look at the connection between disc golf courses' quality and their popularity, we recommend giving the post "Are 'Popular' Courses 'Good' Courses?" from sociology professor Josh Woods a read.

Not Everything is Bigger in Texas

Far and away the most surprising #1 course in any state is Texas' Flying Armadillo Mini. It is a course designed with the gimmicks and creative obstacles associated with mini golf courses in mind.

"When I introduce it to people, I say it's like putt putt for disc golf, but it's harder and a lot more fun," said Kevin Ballew, manager of the Flying Armadillo Pro Shop.

Hole one sets the tone with a dinosaur guardian near the basket, and the oddities continue from there. Players face "The Ultimate Gimmick" where they have to throw past a gate and a wall of car hoods, one where they toss a disc down from an elevated platform, another with a metal ramp to try out a roller ace, and perhaps the signature hole, and one of Bellew's favorites, the Lighthouse.

"It's nothing like any other disc golf," Bellew said. "There's obstacles that you have to shoot around. There's artwork on every hole. There's a fricking yellow submarine next to one hole. One of the baskets is at the top of a lighthouse. When you ace that one, it's one of the most fun aces there is because you get the chi-ching and then it falls down the lighthouse and then ka-thunk. There's no doubt it stuck."

Bellew believes the course has become so beloved because it's a rare mix of absurdist fun and high challenge.

"It's harder than you think it'd be, being a par 2," Ballew said. "I mean, there's very few 36s get turned in. It's unique. It's not like any other disc golf, but it really sharpens the short game. As a warm up it's great for the big course because by the time you played the mini, you're ready to putt."

The "big course" Ballew mentioned is the traditional disc golf course also available at the Flying Armadillo. That course made the state's top five, too.

You can learn more about the mini course (and other interesting ones) in our article "Extraordinary Courses: The Armadillo, Ghost, And Mine."

Do New Number Ones Indicate Shifting Tastes?

About a fifth of states had a change in their top course from last year's list to this year's.

Like last year, we reviewed key phrases and words that popped up in reviews of these courses. Also like last year, reviews of the new number ones generally included these five keys: well-maintained, challenging, beautiful, fun layout, and mix of shot types required

However, there was a difference: Reviews of this year's number ones included the phrases wooded and elevation changes much more often. It may be a little surprising, but those weren't too high on the list of key elements in last year's list. Perhaps as the sport grows, what players favor is changing.

The Five Best Disc Golf Courses In Each U.S. State: 2021

Each state's top five courses are below. States appear in alphabetical order.

Here are other things to know before you dive into the top fives:

  • The courses on this list earned their spots purely from their stats and not due to the opinions of UDisc's staff. Honestly, we were just as surprised and interested in the results as our readers.
  • A course name in blue indicates that the course was also its state's most popular (i.e., most played) in 2020. See more in our post on last year's most popular disc golf course in each state.
  • Click or tap on the name of any course to see recent reviews, photos, current conditions, and more on its UDisc Courses page.
  • Temporary courses (ones erected for only a very short period each year) were not eligible for the 2021 list. Seasonal courses were eligible.
  • The rankings in this list may differ from what appears on UDisc Places pages for these states. We used slightly different calculations to create these tables than what you'll find on UDisc Places. Additionally, rankings on UDisc Places will change throughout the year as disc golfers experience and rate courses.
