Though disc golf was, like Bruce Springsteen (and a few other people), born in the USA, its popularity is spreading worldwide. As of yet, no place outside North America has taken to the sport quite like Europe. So, it was always the plan to give Europe the same treatment the U.S. got in our post on the most popular courses in every state.
Well, ladies and gentleman, we've done just that. And today we're happy to present to you the most popular courses in Europe.
To start out with, let's go ahead and clear the air about a couple of things.
First, in this article "popular" means simply "most played," not "most liked." Second, we can only judge the amount of plays by rounds logged in UDisc. If you have data to back up a discrepancy you find in this list, we'd really love to see it. Send us an e-mail with your information1, and your story might just become Release Point's next post.
With these two things in mind, we've compiled a list of the five most popular courses in each European country where a disc golf course registered in UDisc exists. You can find that list at the bottom of this post. But before that, let's take a look at a few interesting points from the data.
Europe Has More Courses in Top 10 Than US
For reasons linked to both the sport's popularity and more restrictions on space and use of land in much of Europe, there are just fewer disc golf courses on the continent. However, that lack of courses means that what courses there are in areas with high densities of players are getting played a lot.
In fact, six of the top 10 most-played courses worldwide are in Europe. Discover which ones they are by reading the list at the end of this piece.
The Map
Here are our three big takeaways from this map:
1. Let us marvel at the glory that is Northern Europe. Its circles look like gas giants on the map. The top five courses in Norway, Sweden, and Finland all have more played rounds than any course in the next tier of countries, Germany and the UK.
2. Although the disc golf round density is spread around in most countries, the Reykjavík and Helsinki regions in Iceland and Finland—and to some extent the area around Tallinn, Estonia—dominate the disc golf scene in those countries.
3. Oh, Southern Europe. Take advantage of your weather and get out and play!
